#2. READING COMPREHENSION MYSTERY PICTURES

Want your Spanish students to learn about notable Hispanic Americans AND improve their reading comprehension skills? Check out these no-prep reading comprehension mystery pictures! Your Spanish students will improve their reading comprehension skills as they read a passage about Selena, Marc Anthony, or Roberto Clemente and answer a variety of questions about what they read.

These Spanish pixel art activities are self-checking Google Sheets! If a student’s answer is correct, part of the hidden picture will be revealed. If a student’s answer is incorrect, the picture will not change. That lets the student know he/she needs to try again. The instant feedback really helps students improve their skills! Students love trying to guess what the picture is as they complete the activity. Hint: it always has to do with the reading passage!

There are two versions of the activity included with each mystery pic below- one that is 100% in Spanish and one that has instructions, hints, and some questions in English. Perfect for differentiation or use with different levels! With one purchase, you’d be set for lesson/sub plans for Spanish 1-4.

These two come in Spanish and English!

3. READING ACTIVITIES

5. MOVIES

CESAR CHAVEZ

There are two great movies about Cesar Chavez for Spanish class. The first is called Cesar Chavez and you can watch the trailer HERE. It’s available to rent or buy on Amazon HERE. I have questions in Spanish and English to keep kids on task and engaged while watching the movie HERE.

IMDb has this to say about the 1hr 42m movie starring Michael Peña: “Chronicling the birth of a modern American movement, Cesar Chavez tells the story of the famed civil rights leader and labor organizer torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to securing a living wage for farm workers. Passionate but soft-spoken, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle to bring dignity to people. Chavez inspired millions of Americans from all walks of life who never worked on a farm to fight for social justice. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual’s ability to change the world.”

VIVA LA CAUSA

The second movie is a free documentary called Viva La Causa and you can view it HERE. Grab questions in Spanish and English to go along with the movie HERE.

Director Alonso Mayo has this to say about the free 48m documentary: “Mistreated and exploited for decades, a small group of poor and powerless California farm workers led by Cesar Chavez, risk everything when they launch a strike and national boycott against the multimillion-dollar California grape industry. In doing so, they create a national movement to support them in their fight for dignity and justice.

Viva La Causa focuses on one of the seminal events in the march for human rights — the grape strike and boycott led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta in the 1960s. Viva La Causa will show how thousands of people from across the nation joined in a struggle for justice for the most exploited people in our country — the workers who put food on our tables.”

SELENA

Selena starring Jennifer Lopez is always a hit in Spanish class, too. You can view the trailer HERE and check out the viewing options on Amazon HERE. Grab 49 questions for students to answer before, during, and after watching the movie HERE.

IMDb has this to say about the 2hr 7m movie starring Jennifer Lopez: “The true story of Selena Quintanilla, a Texas-born Tejano singer who rose from cult status to performing at the Astrodome, as well as having chart-topping albums on the Latin music charts.”

A MILLION MILES AWAY

Amazon has this to say about the 2hr 2m movie starring Michael Peña: “Inspired by the real-life story of NASA flight engineer José Hernández, A Million Miles Away follows him on a decades-long journey, from a rural village in Michoacán, Mexico, to more than 200 miles above the Earth in the International Space Station. With the support of his family, José’s drive & determination culminates in the opportunity to achieve his seemingly impossible goal.”

Check out the official trailer on YouTube HERE. Buy questions for it HERE.

THE LONG GAME

Amazon has this to say about the 1hr 52m movie starring Jay Hernandez, Dennis Quaid, and Cheech Marin: “The Long Game is a beautiful, inspirational true story about five young Mexican-American caddies in 1957 who, barred from playing on the courses where they caddied, decided to build their own golf course in the South Texas desert and ultimately won the state championship with the help of their superintendent-turned-coach.”
